Not too long ago, the success or failure of a special event could be measured by the number of TV cameras in attendance or how many print journalists showed up. As we approach 2025, does counting TV cameras still matter? Or are there other ways—perhaps even better ways—to get the word out about our event and our organization? Is owned media more important nowadays than earned media? In these days of smaller news staffs and fewer resources, what can PR professionals do to help ensure a good media turnout and positive coverage?

Join us on Tuesday, November 12, at 5:30 p.m. to meet a panel of PR experts who can answer all those questions and many more. They have decades of hands-on experience on both sides of the TV camera, behind the radio microphone, in front of the college classroom, and inside a fast-paced PR and strategic communications agency. At this Q&A comms pros may learn what works, what doesn’t, and what tactics are considered absolute no-no’s by the editors and reporters whose coverage we covet. Our panel:

Jamie Costello recently retired after 46 years in radio and television. The Emmy Award winning news anchor and reporter finished out his career working in his hometown at WMAR-TV, the ABC affiliate in Baltimore, where he spent 37 years. Jamie was inducted into the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Silver Circle. He is active in hosting events for various organizations by raising awareness and raising money. Jamie has taken his talent of storytelling to WSSC Water in Laurel. He currently serves as a Public Information Officer and Video Content Creator. He lives in Annapolis with his wife Cheryl and two children.

Sue Kopen Katcef, a member of the UMD Merrill College Hall of Fame, is currently a freelance reporter for Maryland Public Television. She spent nearly two decades teaching full-time at her alma mater, the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland, where she served as the Broadcast Bureau Director of the Merrill College’s Capital News Service for ten years (and an adjunct for nearly a decade prior to joining full-time). Sue also worked as a reporter and anchor for Hearst owned WBAL Radio and as a reporter for WJZ Television and WCBM/Metromedia Radio in Baltimore. Sue has served on many professional boards (is the current Chesapeake Associated Press Broadcasters’ Association president) and earned many honors.
